Boxelder trees reach respectable sizes — up to 60' tall and with a trunk up to 4.5' in diameter (although 3' is more typical). Branching is rapid such that the crown may be wider than the tree is tall. Boxelder is dioecious — trees either produce all male (staminate) or all female (pistillate) flowers. Neither male or female flowers have petals; both consist of drooping, hairy filaments that bear either 5 reddish-brown anthers (male as in the image) or a greenish-white, deeply-forked style (female). The flowers are wind pollinated.

About

I want to acknowledge the work of a friend and colleague, Dr. Fred Donner. We both share a passion for the flowers in Jackson Park. Fred's website (jacksonparkwildflowers.org) inspired me to build my own website and database; use and enjoy them both.

I am also pleased to thank my ninja web gurus and coders, Lindsey Young and Stefanie Engstrom. This site would not exist without their herculean labors.
