Ohio buckeye flowers occur on a robust, hairy panicle 4-8" tall, usually located near the tips of the smaller branches. The upper flowers in the panicle are primarily male (produce stamens only) while the middle and lower flowers are mostly perfect (produce both pistils and stamens). Flowers are about 1" across, consisting of 4 greenish-yellow petals with rounded tips (sometimes with a reddish patch near their base), 7 white stamens with orange anthers that are longer than the petals (exerted), and (in perfect flowers) a single white style longer than the stamens.

Aesculus glabra

Ohio buckeye [Blooms: Apr/May–?]

Bottlebrush buckeye is a shrub that can be up to 12' high. Flower spikes are 10-30" long and visually very striking. Individual flowers are tubular, several inches long, with stamens that protrude to double the length of the corolla. Native to Alabama and Georgia; introduced to Illinois. Foliage and fruit very similar to the native Ohio buckeye (A. glabra), but the flowers are quite distinct. Both the nuts and leaves are highly poisonous.
