White snakeroot's stems are light green or tan, 1.5-3' tall. Flower clusters are 2-6" across with 9-25 flowers. Individual flowerheads are 1/2" across, composed of 10-30 disk florets with bright white, 5-lobed, spreading corollas and (extended) styles; ray florets are absent. The flowerheads are superficially similar to boneset (Eupatorium spp.) but very different in detail and the leaves of each are distinctive. White snakeroot blooms late into the fall. This plant is highly toxic. The toxins (collectively known as tremetol) are passed to the meat and (especially) milk of herbivores that eat the foliage. Snakeroot toxins (in milk from a dairy cow) likely caused the death of Abraham Lincoln's mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln.
