Virginia mountain-mint flower heads are 3/4-1" across with up to 50 flowers; only a few flowers open at any one time. The flowers are hairy on the outer surfaces, white to light purple in color. Individual flowers are 1/4" across, tubular, and two-lipped; the lower lip is three-lobed with purple spots; four stamens with purple anthers emerge from the lower tube. There are two styles with deeply-notched tips that extend well beyond the edges of the lips of the corolla. The calyx that cups the flower is hairy, light green and has five triangular teeth.

Upright prairie coneflower (aka, "Mexican hat") is a 1-3' tall plant native to North America but an exotic in Illinois; it looks like English plantain (Plantago lanceolata) dressed up for a party. The stems are green and longitudinally ridged; they bear alternate, pinnatifid leaves with 5-11 elongate, narrow lobes. The upper stems produce flower stalks (peduncles) 2-12" long, minutely grooved, and lacking leaves; the peduncles are very "wire-like." The flowerheads are 1.5-3" long cylinders composed of numerous brown or purplish disk florets that bloom from the bottom of the cylinder to the top; at the base of the cylinder are 4-12 ray florets with drooping, 1/2-1.5" long, oblong petals with notched tips that are yellow, maroon, or yellow with basal maroon patches (the "party skirt"). This plant is unmistakable when in bloom. The imaged flower was photographed in Bobolink Meadow in July, 2010; I have not seen a specimen since.

In buckthorn, umbels of flowers arise from leaf axils. Flowers on a single plant may be perfect (both male and female organs present), but more commonly the flowers are dioecious with either all male (staminate) or all female (pistillate) flowers found on any given plant. Individual flowers are 1/4" across. They have four greenish-yellow, triangular, spreading sepals that together form a calyx and four petals that can't be easily seen without magnification; the "petals" in the flowers are actually sepals. Male flowers have four greenish stamens with cream-colored anthers; female flowers have a single style that has a tip divided into four branches. After fertilization, female (or perfect) flowers produce a shiny black, 1/4" wide, cherry-like fruit containing 3-4 seeds. Birds can eat the fruit without ill effects, but in humans the fruit produces stomach cramps and acts as a strong laxative (as indicated by the species name, "cathartica").

Jetbead flowers are solitary, arising on the tips of the green twigs. Flowers are elevated on 1/4-1/2" long stalks. There are four green sepals at the base of the flower, each with a bractlet half the length of the sepals that is located below the intersection of each pair of sepals. Four white, nearly circular petals alternate in position with the sepals. A greenish hypanthium covers the center of the flower with a four-lobed ridge marking its edges. Numerous (30-60) stamens with white filaments and yellow anthers, usually in four distinct clusters, lie inside the ridge; the stamens surround four pistils, each with a single style and a circular, terminal stigma. After fertilization, 1-4 fruits develop in the center of the flower that turn shiny black at maturity (the "jetbead"); the seeds remain attached to the persistant sepals until late in the fall and may persist through the winter.

Missouri gooseberry produces groups (racemes or corymbs) of 1-3 flowers on a horizontal flower stalk near some leaf petioles; the 1/4-1/2" long flower pedicels droop downward, so the axis of the flower is vertical. An egg-shaped, sessile bract is present at the base of each flower stalk. Missouri gooseberry flowers are easy to overlook because they don't comport with one's usual idea of "flowers" — they are very elongate, as if viewed in a fun house mirror. The flowers have a very narrow, white or greenish-white, tubular calyx with 4-5 oblong, spreading or reflected sepal lobes as long as the calyx; five short, erect petals extending from the calyx; and 4-5 stamens that double the vertical length of the flower. Hidden inside, at the base of the calyx, is a smooth ovary topped by a single pistil with one style; only the style is visible externally, sometimes extending past the stamens during flowering. After fertilization, the flower parts wither and the ovary expands into a smooth, globular berry 6-12 mm in diameter containing numerous tiny seeds; the berry is initially green, turning dull red or dull purple when ripe. If you see a gooseberry in Jackson Park with a prickly surface on the fruit (looking like a miniature, green medieval mace), it is prickly gooseberry, Ribes cynosbati, which also has lobed leaves. I have yet to see prickly gooseberry in Jackson Park, but it is known to occur in northern Illinois.

The upper stems of marsh yellow-cress end in one or more 2-8" long racemes of flowers; racemes may also develop from leaf axils. Flowers in bloom are restricted to the tip of the raceme; cylindrical seedpods (siliques) oriented perpendicular to the stem decorate the lower regions of the raceme. Individual flowers are tiny (about 3 mm long) with four greenish-yellow oblong sepals, four yellow spatulate petals, 4-6 stamens with yellow or light brown anthers, and a stout style with a two-lobed stigma. After fertilization, 3-10 mm long, dumbbell-shaped, hairless, green siliques containing two rows of tiny seeds develop. The siliques bear the remnant of the style on one end and 1/2" long pedicels on the other.

Sweet coneflower flowerheads are 2-3.5" across, occurring as single blooms on the tips of stems or branches. A flowerhead is comprised of numerous 1/2" long medium green, lance-shaped phyllaries, downy with short hairs; 10-20 bright yellow, oblong, sterile ray florets with a tiny notch at their tips; and a deep brown hemisphere of 200-400 disk florets (the central disc). The disk florets have a tubular, dark reddish-purple corolla; bifurcated stigmas that have sharp tips; with the purplish-brown anthers adhering side by side around the deep purple styles. Sweet coneflower is distinctive among the Jackson Park coneflowers with its chocolate brown disk and bright yellow, elongate-oval petals with a shallow notch at their tips.

Wild mustard's upper stems end in racemes of 1/2" wide yellow flowers. Each flower has four yellow petals, six yellow stamens, and a single green pistil. After fertilization, the pistil elongates into a thin, cylindrical silique (seedpod), 1/2-1.5" long, filled with tiny (2 mm diameter) brown or black seeds; the distal third of the silique is a ridged or square "beak". The seeds are reported to remain dormant but viable in the soil for up to 60 years.

Sinapis

Sinapis arvensis

wild mustard [Blooms: May-Jun]

Hedge mustard flowers occur at the tips of long, slender flower stalks that curve upward; the flower stalks typically arise in abundance at the top of the plant. Each flower is small (1/4" across) with four greenish-yellow sepals, four rectangular yellow petals with rounded tips, a single stout style, and six stamens. The fruit is a very slender, cylindrical seedpod (silique) lower on the flower stalk than the blooming flowers; the siliques are 3/8-3/4" long, erect, oriented parallel to and often appressed to the flower stalk, with the remains of the style on their tips. The siliques turn light brown when mature and split open to release the seeds. The short (<3/4"), straight, appressed seedpods and the upward-curving, sparse flower stalks with only a few blooms open at any one time distinguish hedge mustard from other local mustards.

The axils of the middle and upper leaves of woodland goldenrod produce small clusters of 1-12 flowerheads; the stem tip may also develop a small (3" long, 1.5" across) panicle of flowerheads. Individual flowerheads are tiny (3 mm) consisting of 4-5 ray florets with yellow, oblong-elliptical "petals" and 3-6 disc florets with golden yellow, tubular corollas with five tiny lobes. At the base of each flowerhead are three overlapping series of light green, elongate-elliptical bracts (phyllaries). The fruit is a small, bullet-shaped seed 1-2 mm long with a tuft of white hairs 3-5 mm long. In Illinois, only woodland goldenrod and broad-leafed goldenrod (Solidago flexicaulis) produce clusters of flowerheads from the axils of the middle and upper leaves; however, the latter has coarsely serrated leaves with petioles and should be easy to distinguish from woodland goldenrod.

Solidago caesia

woodland goldenrod [Blooms: Sep-Oct]

The tip of broad-leaved goldenrod's stem produces a cylindrical inflorescence (a raceme or a narrow panicle) 1.5-5" long and about a third as wide; smaller racemes (1/2-1.5" long, smaller than the leaves) arise from the axils of the upper leaves. Individual flowerheads are about 1/4" across with 3-4 yellow ray florets asymmetrically deployed around the flowerhead and 4-8 yellow disk florets. The base of the flowerhead is surrounded by 3-5 series of unequal, narrowly oblong, light green phyllaries; the outermost phyllaries are 1-2 mm long while the innermost are 3.7-4.7 mm long. Broad-leaved goldenrod prefers high-quality, moist, shaded woodlands. In Illinois, only broad-leaved goldenrod and woodland goldenrod (Solidago caesia) produce clusters of flowerheads from the axils of the middle and upper leaves. Broad-leaved goldenrod has unusually large flowers for a goldenrod and the ray florets are not evenly distributed around the flowerhead. In addition, woodland goldenrod has smooth or finely serrated leaf margins (rather than coarsely-toothed leaves) and no petioles (the leaves are sessile) — it should be easy to distinguish from broad-leaved goldenrod.

Early goldenrod's inflorescence is apical, a panicle of flowering stems that "often arch upward and outward like a fireworks display" (John Hilty, www.illinoiswildflowers.info). Individual flowerheads are about 1/4" across; they have 4-12 yellow ray florets, not all open at one time, and 8-15 yellow disk florets. The base of the flowerhead is surrounded by 3-4 series of overlapping, narrow, hairless, yellowish-green bracts (phyllaries) that together are 3-4 mm (1/16") long. The pedicels (flower stalks) are usually hairless, all attached on one side of the panicle's flowering branches and curving upward. The fruit is a cone-shaped dry seed 1-1.5 mm long with an attached tuft of light brown hairs 2.5-3.5 mm long. The combination of wing-like leaflets in the leaf axils, hairless stems and leaves, and an inflorescence whose flowering stems flare up and out is diagnostic for early goldenrod. Field goldenrod (Solidago nemoralis) is much the same size and general appearance, but has hairy stems and leaves, unlike early goldenrod.

Solidago

Solidago juncea

early goldenrod [Blooms: Jul/Aug-?]

The wand-shaped, nodding inflorescence of field goldenrod arises from the tip of the stem; it is 3-7" long and widest in the middle, tapering towards either end; the flowerheads are all on one side of the flower branches. Flowerheads are each 1/4" across consisting of 4-10 yellow ray florets and 3-10 yellow disk florets. The bracts (phyllaries) surrounding the base of the flowerhead are in three overlapping series; they are pale greenish yellow, covered in short, white hairs. The fruit is a dry seed 0.5-2 mm long with an attached tuft of light brown hairs. Field goldenrod can be distinguished from other goldenrods by (1) its diminutive size, (2) the inflorescence that nods to one size, (3) leaflets present in leaf axils (4) short, fine hairs on both leaves and stems, and (5) the grayish cast of the leaves.

Showy goldenrod's inflorescence is a showy, cylindrical panicle up to 12" long arising from the tip of the stem; the flowering stems are erect or curve upwards and the flowerheads occur on all sides of the flowering stems. (Unlike most goldenrods, where the flowering stems curve outward and downward and the flowerheads are on one side of the flowering stems.) Each flowerhead is about 1/4" across consisting of 4-10 large (for a goldenrod) pistillate ray florets (no stamens) and 6-16 perfect disk florets (both stamens and style). Behind the flowerhead are 3-4 series of overlapping bracts (phyllaries), each with a prominent midvein. The fruit is a 2 mm long seed with dark brown longitudinal grooves and a tuft of light brown hairs. Showy goldenrod is distinguished from other goldenrods by the character combination of: (1) stem leaf margins smooth (not toothed), (2) wing-like leaflets in axils of upper leaves, (3) the stems of the inflorescence erect or curve upward (not out and down), and (4) stems and leaves largely or completely hairless except in the inflorescence.

Elmleaf goldenrod's stem (and sometimes upper leaf axils) produces an open, airy inflorescence (a panicle) at its tip that may be a foot tall and wide with arching, widely-spreading branches. The flowerheads rest on very short stems (nearly sessile) along one side of the major branches, facing upward; on the opposite side of the branches are small (1") bracts. Both stems and branches in the inflorescence are covered with hairs. The flowerheads are 1/8-1/4" across with 3-6 yellow, pistillate ray florets (no stamens) and 4-7 yellow, perfect disk florets (both stamens and a style). Surrounding the base of the flowerheads are 16-18 bracts (phyllaries) in 2-3 overlapping series.

Great Plains ladies'-tresses flowers are arranged in three rows spiraling up around the stem. The petals and sepals are both white with a tinge of yellow on the lower lip (lower petal). The two petals are top and bottom of the bloom, with the lower, ruffled petal extending out and down; the two sepals are narrower than the petals and flank the side of the bloom, sometimes arching higher than the petals. Typically, there is a single stamen; the style is fused to the surface of the lower petal deep in the flower. The base of the flower is nestled between oval green bracts which cup the ovary and taper to a sharp point above the flower. Great Plains ladies'-tresses are probably pollinated by bumblebees, but information is sparse. If you get down on your hands and knees (or, better, lie down beside the plant) and put your nose up against the blooms, it is really true that they smell like vanilla(!). A closely related species, nodding ladies'-tresses (Spiranthes cernua) was once considered to be the same species as Great Plains ladies tresses, but the former still has its basal leaves on blooming and no scent while the latter never has the basal leaves when blooming and the flowers smell like vanilla.

Japanese tree lilac (aka, Japanese lilac) is an exotic shrub or tree that is native to Asia; it gets 20-30 feet tall and 15-25 feet wide. It may have multiple trunks. The bark on the trunk is shiny and reddish-brown (rather like cherry trees) with horizontally elongated lenticels (air pores). The leaves are 2-5.5" long and 1-3" wide, opposite, dark green, oval with a sharp tip and a rounded base with a 1/2-1" petiole, pinnate venation, and smooth margins. The inflorescences are 6-12" high panicles dense with creamy-white flowers. Individual flowers have a 1-2 mm long calyx; a 3-5 mm long cream-colored corolla with five stubby lobes (petals) and a four-lobed apex; five white stamens with yellow anthers widely spreading radially; and a single long white style bearing a club-like stigma. The fruits are 3/4" long dry capsules, initially green but turning reddish-brown or yellow with maturity. The capsule splits to release the two winged seeds.

Purple meadow-rue is a native perennial that is listed as "vulnerable" in Illinois. The species is found in most of the lower 48 states in the U.S. but is notably absent from states on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts (however, it is present along the Gulf of Mexico). Purple meadow-rue is dioecious — some plants produce only staminate (male) flowers, each with around a dozen stamens; other plants bear only pistillate (female) flowers, each with about ten pistils. The male flowers are the showier of the two. Petals are absent (the plant is wind-pollinated). Both the narrow, whitish-grey, thread-like pistils and the yellow-green stamens (with pale yellow anthers) droop from 4-5 light green sepals (that may drop off). Fertilized female flowers develop a single, spindle-shaped fruit that is 1/4" long, elongated, sharply pointed with a remnant style, 4-6 raised ribs, and slightly concave along one side. The fruit is initially green, turning brown with maturity. Early meadow-rue (Thalictrum dioicum) is similar to purple meadow-rue but has light purplish-green stems and leaves with 3-9 (typically five) rounded lobes and long petioles on the upper leaves.
