Common alumroot is quite unprepossessing. It’s a sizeable plant with stems (actually flower stalks) 2-4 feet tall, but the stems are green with a cover of white hairs and totally lack leaves — not an attention-getter. At the tip of the stems are 8″ long panicles of inconspicuous cylindrical flowers, greenish in color, with orange anthers the sole spot of color. The cylindrical calyx is about 1/2″ long, divided apically into five rounded lobes; five spoon-shaped petals emerge between the lobes of the calyx. The five stamens with orange anthers protrude outside the opening of the calyx; the two styles emerge from the calyx about as far as the anthers.. The two upper lobes of the flowers are often significantly longer than the three lower lobes. Fertilized flowers rotate to a vertical position and the seed capsule forms within the remains of the calyx; the remains of the two thread-like styles often persist. Common alumroot is visually very similar to prairie alumroot (Heuchera americana, which I have not yet seen in Jackson Park), but prairie alumroot’s stems are either bare or have short hairs that lie against the stem.

Leaves are restricted to a rosette of circular or (barely) heat-shaped, palmately-lobed basal leaves 3-5″ across with 5-9 lobes and coarsely serrated margins; the underside of the leaves have long (to the point of shaggy) white hairs along the veins. Both the stems (particularly near the base) and the leaf petioles are very hairy. Common alumroot is visually very similar to prairie alumroot (Heuchera americana, which I have not yet seen in Jackson Park), but prairie alumroot’s stems are either bare or have short hairs that lie against the stem.
