Kochia’s greenish-yellow flowers are 4-5 mm across. Perfect flowers have five green, bluntly-triangular sepals that develop wings along their outer face, no petals, five stamens each with two large yellow or pink anthers, and a divided style; pistillate flowers lack the stamens. The flowers are wind-pollinated. The fruit is a flattened, five-lobed, winged capsule nestled in the sepals that contains a solitary seed. ITIS says that the accepted name for this plant is Kochia scoparia; World Flora Online claims the proper binomial is Bassia scoparia.
Kochia (Kochia scoparia) stems and leaves. The branches shown here bear numerous floral spikes. The leaves are sparser; some of the leaves in the main image are highlighted with white arrows. An enlarged leaf is presented in the insert on the lower left.
Kochia is a weedy annual native to Eurasia; it has evolved resistance to major herbicides and is a nuisance in disturbed habitats and agricultural fields. It can reach a wide range of sizes (1-6 feet); the larger plants are quite imposing. Stems are circular in section, red or greenish with lighter longitudinal stripes. The distinctive leaves are alternate, 2.5″ long and 1/4″ across, sessile, with smooth margins often fringed with hairs twice the width of the leaves. Flowers develop in clusters of 2-6 near leaf axils; the clusters lengthen to 1/2-2″ long; they are covered with 1/2″ needle-like bracts with hairs that may exceed the length of the bracts. ITIS says that the accepted name for this plant is Kochia scoparia; World Flora Online claims the proper binomial is Bassia scoparia.
Kochia (Kochia scoparia) plants in situ. The plant on the left is about six feet tall. The plant on the right is about 3 feet tall; the yellowish-green floral spikes are apparent.
