Mimulus ringens

square-stemmed monkeyflower [Blooms: Jul-Sep]

Square-stemmed monkeyflower flowers arise singly from the upper leaf axils; they are tubular and ~1" long. The calyx is light green, elongate (about 2/3" — quite large relative to the corolla), and tubular, with five sharp longitudinal ridges/wings that project into lance-like teeth; the flower pedicels are hairless and at least as long as the calyx. The corolla is usually pale blue-violet (rarely pink or white) with a two-lobed, erect upper lip (folded so the upper sides of the lobes are back to back) and a three-lobed lower lip with a patch of yellow on either side of the midline. The throat is lined with hairs and obscured by ridges in the lower lip. The seed capsules develop within the persistant calyx. The flower is quite prolific, producing 500-1000 seeds per flower. Four stamens and a single pistil are present but not visible externally. Square-stemmed monkeyflower strongly prefers moist or wet areas. The only other Illinois monkeyflower (winged monkeyflower, Mimulus alatus) apparently does not occur this far north.
Square-stemmed monkeyflower (Mimulus ringens) flowers and seed capsules. The two images on the right are lateral views of square-stemmed monkeyflower blooms. Note the long flower stalk arising from a leaf axil and the very large calyx with prominent ridges that continue into narrow teeth. The images on the right are frontal views of flowers. Note that the upper lobes of the corolla are reflected back so that upper surfaces of the lobes face each other and that the throat of the corolla is completely obscured. In the image in the upper left, the two green structures in the background are each a persistent calyx from a flower that has been fertilized and the corolla withered; note the remnants of the styles still attached to the ovary in each calyx. The calyx acts as a seed capsule to protect the 500-1000 seeds that will mature in each capsule.

Square-stemmed monkeyflower (aka, Allegheny monkeyflower) grows to 1-3' tall. The stems are square in section but the angles are rounded, sometimes with very narrow wings. The leaves are 4" long and 3" across, opposite, four times longer than wide, with toothed margins and sender tips; all the leaves are sessile and/or clasp the stem. Square-stemmed monkeyflower strongly prefers moist or wet areas. The only other Illinois monkeyflower (winged monkeyflower, Mimulus alatus) apparently does not occur this far north.
