Soft rush (Juncus effusus) flowers. Left, top right: two inflorescences of soft rush early in the development of the flowers. The inflorescences appear to grow out of the side of the culm, but what looks like an extension of the culm above the inflorescence is actually a highly modied bract. Bottom right: mature flowers with remnants of the styles and stigma (arrows) still present.
Soft rush can be 2-4 feet tall, often growing in clumps of culms. Culms terminate in an inflorescence 3/4-4″ across and an underlying bract 4-12″ long that looks more like an extension of the culm than a leaf so the inflorescence looks like it is growing out of the side of the culm. Individual flowers are 2-3.5 mm long with three lance-shaped sepals, three lance-shaped petals, three stamens, and single style emerging from a central ovary; the flowers are wind pollinated. Color of these elements varies from green to brown depending on stage in the life cycle; sepals, petals, and the ovary/capsule are all about the same length at maturity.
Soft rush (Juncus effusus) culms. Bottom: a portion of a soft rush culm about 3 mm in diameter, near the base. Top: cross sections of two culms.
Soft rush can be 2-4 feet tall, often growing in clumps of culms. The culms are medium green, round in section, soft to the touch, hairless and leafless, tapering from 4 mm in diameter at the base to about 2 mm at the inflorescence. Culms terminate in an inflorescence 3/4-4″ across and an underlying bract 4-12″ long that looks more like an extension of the culm than a leaf so the inflorescence looks like it is growing out of the side of the culm.
Soft rush (Juncus effusus). The main image shows a dense clump of soft rush on the east side of Wooded Island. Most of the culms bear an inflorescence. Inset: close-up of one of the inflorescences.
