Silver maples may produce male flowers on separate trees from the female flowers or both male and female flowers may be produced by the same tree. Flowers emerge before the leaves. Staminate flowers occur in small (1/3″ across) clusters on short, lateral spurs from the twigs. The staminate flowers are yellowish-green to red. Individual staminate florets consist of four sepals and 4-6 stamens; there are no petals. Pistillate florets also occur in small (1/3″ across) clusters on short peduncles bordered by several scaly bractlets; the florets are greenish-yellow to red in color. Individual pistillate florets consist of four sepals and a pistil with a pair of styles; there are no petals. The female florets are wind pollinated. Fertilized pistillate florets produce a pair of conjoined winged fruits (samaras) at about 90° from each other; when mature, the samaras are light brown and 1.5-2.5″ long, falling to the ground in early summer. Unlike most other maples, silver maples produce fruits (samaras) that can germinate in the spring of the year in which they are produced.

Silver maple grows to heights of 60-100 feet; it is a relatively fast-growing tree. The crown is ovoid, with many of the branches ascending. The bark on the trunk of mature trees is gray with flattened scales and straight or curving furrows; on older trees the bark can look quite shaggy. The leaves of silver maple are opposite, 3-6″ long and 2-4.75″ across with deep notches between the five primary lobes and with long petioles (2-4.75″). The primary lobes may be further divided into secondary lobes; both primary and secondary lobes are sharply cleft and pointed at the tips of the cusps. The upper surface of the leaves is some shade of light green and is hairless; the underside is also hairless (except near the major veins) but conspicuously whitened, producing a silvery appearance (hence the common name) when the leaves flutter or are flipped in the wind. In the autumn, silver maples generally produce a relatively muted display of pale-yellow leaves.

Silver maple (Acer saccharinum) is a native tree that is widely distributed across the U.S. and Canada. Silver maple grows to heights of 60-100 feet; it is a relatively fast-growing tree. The crown is ovoid, with many of the branches ascending. Silver maple is often found along waterways and in wetlands, giving rise to alternative common names such as “water maple” and “swamp maple.” The root system consists of numerous lateral roots that remain shallow in the soil and are widely spreading. Silver maples were once widely planted in urban settings because of their rapid growth but they have become much less popular because they are prone to branch loss (the wood is brittle), the roots tend to invade sewer lines and other pipes, the crown is not very attractive unless pruned, and they produce very large numbers of seedlings. Be careful not to confuse Acer saccharinum (silver maple) with Acer saccharum (sugar maple); despite the similarity in the species names, they are very different trees.
Silver maples (Acer saccharinum) are known to produce brittle wood. This silver maple tree was located between the Jackson Park Driving Range (on the right) and the trail west of DuSable Lake Shore Drive (in the center of the image). Severe thunderstorms on 06/27/2026 not only snapped this tree at about head height but the trunk split vertically (failed in shear; white arrow) between the uppermost roots and the point where the trunk broke in half.
