Sugar maple trees may produce male and female flowers on separate trees or may produce male and female flowers on the same tree, even on the same branch. Male flowers are produced in drooping umbels, with 3-4″ long, hairy pedicels. Individual male flowers are about 1/8″ long consisting of a yellowish-green calyx with five teeth and 6-8 stamens with yellow anthers (in young flowers) that extend well outside the boundary of the calyx; petals are absent. Female flowers are also produced in drooping umbels; they are 1-2″ long (including the hairy pedicel), but the flower itself is only 1/8″ long consisting of a yellowish-green calyx with five teeth, a two-celled ovary, and a divided style that extends beyond the margin of the calyx. Again, petals are absent. The female flowers are wind pollinated. Fertilized flowers produce pairs of winged fruit (samaras) each about 1″ long, with the two fruits at a 60-90° angle to each other. The samaras mature over the fall and must be exposed to an extensive interval of sub-freezing temperatures during the winter in order to germinate.

Sugar maple (Acer saccharum) is a native tree that can reach heights of 60-100 feet with a trunk 2-3.5 feet across. The bark on the trunk is gray to grayish-brown and produces relatively flat, vertically-elongated, rough-textured plates that cover the trunk. The bark on the branches is gray and smoother; the bark on the twigs is brown and hairless with scattered white lenticels. The leaves are opposite; they are produced along the twigs and young shoots. Individual leaves are 3-6″ long and across with 3-5 palmate lobes; the tips of the lobes are pointed while the base of the sinuses is rounded. The upper three lobes are large and squarish (below their pointed tips); the two basal lobes are highly reduced. Leaf margins are slightly undulate and bear a few large teeth. Leaves are dark green and hairless on the upper surface; the leaf undersides are a pale to medium green, mostly hairless, and sometimes have a light powdery coat. The petiole is about the same length as the leaf blade and is hairless except for a few sparse hairs on its base. In the autumn, the leaves become brilliantly colored in red, orange, or yellow.

Sugar maple (Acer saccharum) is a native tree that can reach heights of 60-100 feet with a trunk 2-3.5 feet across. The basis of the maple syrup and maple sugar industries, this species has long been exploited by both indigenous peoples and European settlers in North America. It’s range in the U.S. extends from parts of Tennessee, Missouri, and western Virginia in the south to (and past) the Canadian border in the north, and from the Atlantic on the east to Missouri, eastern Iowa, and eastern Minnesota in the west. Sugar maple requires a hard freeze during the winter for proper dormancy and for seed germination, which limits its southern range. Sugar maple is exceptionally shade tolerant and is very deep-rooted. Sugar maple does not tolerate urban pollution well and is particularly susceptible to damage from poorly drained soils and road salt. In open areas, the crown of sugar maple is more or less spherical, but young trees growing in a dense understory tend to produce a narrow crown.
Sugar maple can be confused with Norway maple (Acer platanoides), an exotic species that has been widely planted in Jackson Park (and across the state). The leaves of the two species are very similar but, if pulled from the twig, the leaves of sugar maples exude a clear sap from the base of the petiole while the leaves of Norway maple exude a milky sap from the petiole base. In addition, the paired samaras of Norway maple form an angle of 120° (as opposed to the 60-90° angle in sugar maple). Boxelder produces clusters of staminate (male) flowers with very long filaments (much like sugar maple), but those clusters will never include female flowers as sugar maple (sometimes) does. Also, be careful not to confuse Acer saccharinum (silver maple) with Acer saccharum (sugar maple), despite the similarity in their species names.
